About La Grande Traversée
A a national road-cycling relay for high school students : six weeks, six provinces and more than 2,700 km of cycling, in May and June. Participants alternate to cycle across Canada, covering a distance of about 120 km per day. La Grande Traversée is all that, but it is also a youth event as an experiantial education program focused on leadership, healthy life habits, and teamwork skills.
It was created in 2013 and 300 teens from across to the country participate in the relay every year. To do this, they train for several months, adopt a healthy and active lifestyle and work as a team. They also hold daily conferences in schools during which they encourage their peers to follow their example and join the movement, having the opportunity to provide an example through actions rather than words.
With the participation of high profile athletes and public figures all along, cyclists deliver their message by presenting the challenge to othe students with unique school’s conferences.
In 2017, in recognition of accomplishments since 2013, Laurent Brisebois and Emilie Bureau from La Grande Traversee (LGT) receive the Meritorious Service Medal of the Governor General of Canada, by Her Excellency the Right Honorable Julie Payette.Read more
